Dreams, schemes and Fernlea

Good afternoon! Or perhaps great afternoon is more appropriate? The sun is shining, my belly (and my heart) are nicely full thanks to Connect and Sheryl’s delectable home-made pies, and I’m working to the delightful sounds of the extremely talented opera singers rehearsing in the hall. Could life get any better? Surely not!

It feels like the ideas and dreams we shared a few months ago at our family gathering are coming to life with each day. Freeze Frame Opera start their rehearsals in the hall next week, there’s a wedding in the chapel next Friday, a documentary being filmed next month, and the delightful Lucinda Marley in concert next Saturday!

The Lucinda Marley Quartet: Saturday 20th April, 7.30pm

Embark on a captivating journey as Lucinda weaves personal narratives and melodious tales into a mesmerising performance. Lucinda's repertoire, comprising original compositions and soulful arrangements, delves into emotional themes of love, loss, and hope. Prepare to be enchanted by songs from revered artists such as Kristin Berardi, Norah Jones, and Ella Fitzgerald, reimagined in Lucinda's unique style. Accompanying Lucinda are Perth's finest musicians: Harry Mitchell on piano, Alistair Peel on double-bass, and Ben Vanderwal on drums. Together, they'll grace the stage and transport you to a world of musical enchantment.

Don't miss out on this unforgettable evening of musical brilliance! Tickets are $30 and can be purchased here or by speaking with Keaton.

Fancy a trip down south?

Well get yourself to this Sunday’s service where our esteemed auctioneer, Barry Ryall, will be banging the gavel on not one, but two nights at the charming Fernlea Cottage in Dwellingup. Generously donated by Barry & Sheryl, the highest bidder will be treated to a relaxing and peaceful stay in the self-contained, fully equipped, three bedroom cottage overlooking the State Forrest. Spend your days soaking up the sunshine in the cottage’s impressive garden, or taking in the sights and sounds of the great Australian bush on the many nearby walking tracks. Those seeking adventure can take on canoeing and white-water rafting in the Murray River, followed by a well-deserved class of Riesling from the local wineries. By golly, I think I’ve just convinced myself to put a bid in! Dates can be negotiated with Barry and Sheryl and anyone unable to make it this Sunday can send a silent bid to myself or Barry.

Golfing for a good course

The inaugural Dalkeith Road Golf Tournament was a hit! Contenders paired up and enjoyed an afternoon of friendly competition and light-hearted banter as they swung and putted around the Claremont Golf Club. Congratulations to the Putting Pastors, Grant & Barry who took home first prize, 2 x $100 vouchers for dinner at the Claremont Golf Club! All the proceeds from this fabulous fundraiser go toward air-conditioning in the hall. Thank you to Susan for arranging a lovely afternoon and for sponsoring the drinks and nibbles.

Good Fridays, Better Sundays.

Here we are, almost at the end of yet another month! Can you believe how fast it’s flying? I find myself becoming shocked each time I write the date. It would be upsetting if it weren’t for the abundance of enticing activity and joyful celebrations that await us in the coming weeks! Let’s have a look, shall we?

Good Fridays, Better Sundays

Join us this Easter season for a celebration of beautiful music and reverent worship. Our Good Friday service will be more traditional in nature, creating a space for reflection, contemplation and prayer. Exquisite melodies, heartfelt chants and readings will guide us through the story of Easter. Featuring the enchanting sounds of the Dalkeith Road Consort with musical works by Palestrina, Byrd and Bach.

Back by popular demand, our beloved flower-covered cross will once again grace our front corner, showcasing its splendour for all to see. If you have any floral arrangements just waiting to shine, bring them along in plenty! Your contributions will be a big help for those of us who may not have the greenest of thumbs. If you're short on flowers, don’t fear! We'll have a small selection available here too.

Easter Sunday will be a celebration of life and faith as we come together to honour God with music and community. A special Easter Sunday concert during the service will include performances by some of our members, including the Dalkeith Road Choir Girls, Lucinda Marley, and Grant, as well as former Dalkeith Road School of Music student, Charlotte Sharrin. Come along for a true Easter celebration as we give thanks for the goodness of God! Both services commence at 10am, followed by coffee and morning tea.

Concerts at Dalkeith Road: The Lucinda Marley Quartet

Going once…

We’ve started a new Sunday tradition! The Dalkeith Road Air-Conditioning Auctions. Every Sunday morning during morning tea we auction off an item generously donated by a member of our community. Week 1 was a luscious, creeping pot plant, week 2: deliciously decadent Rocky Road. What will week 3 bring? You’ll have to come to find out! There are whispers of fudge, melting moments, handy-man services and a weekend away at Dwellingup! All proceeds go toward our goal to raise $25,000 for air conditioning in the hall and chapel. So far, we’ve reached an impressive $5,253 and once we hit $15,000, we’ll commence installation in the hall! This initiative is of course in line with our plans to invest in making our beloved building desirable to hirers for weddings, rehearsals, exercise classes and a many other community-centric activities. All of which help to connect to and provide for our community, while generating income to keep our ministry running. If you have an item, service, asset, or skill, that you’d like to contribute, do let me know! Or simply bring it along with you one Sunday and we’ll commence the bidding.

Greater than the sum of its parts

Is it just me, or is there something kind of magical about our Sunday service? More and more I have been feeling a sense of renewal, a calming peace, and a beautiful contentment as I come into our space. I am fully aware that this doesn’t happen by accident. It requires the selfless giving of our servant-hearted community. Those wonderful volunteers who arrive early and stay late. Arranging flowers in vases, aligning pews, rehearsing songs, wrestling with technology, emptying bins, preparing prayers, filling communion cups and turning on the sprinklers. To each of you, I say a whole-hearted, gratitude-filled thank you. It is your contribution which creates a picture far more spectacular than any one person could paint on their own.

There are endless opportunities to contribute to the humming of our community. We are seeking people to give the reading, to pray and to play (instruments), to share a communion message, to sing and man (or woman) the AV desk. If you have a hankering to become more actively involved, please shoot me an email or come and see me on a Sunday. We would love to have you join our volunteer team.

Well that’s about all from me on this beautiful, sunny Thursday. I hope to see you this Sunday and the following weeks for our celebration of Easter.

Love and blessings,

Simmone

A cool change

Greetings!

I trust this message finds you basking in the beauty of the week, finding joy in the simplest of moments and gratitude in the smallest of blessings.

Personally, I am still on a high following our get-together last Sunday, for the Summer addition of our Family Gathering. It is both encouraging and exciting to hear the contributions of the Dalkeith Road community. So loving, so generous, so intent on creating a place for people to connect and belong. If you were unlucky enough to miss it (or would like to relive it), let me give you the gist.

Hasn’t the Lord been good to us?!

We reminisced about the many, wonderful opportunities we’ve had to come together and share life over the last 6 months. Some of my favourites were Lunch in the Hills, the Jazz Night and Romantic Impressions concerts, Baby Dedication for Maeve and Eli, and Carols on the Lawn.

A thriving School of Music and Concert Venue

Keaton shared his hopes for the School of Music this coming year. Dreams to have more than 100 lessons taking place each week, and a full schedule of concerts providing our teachers, students, and local musicians a platform (or a stage, if you will) for sharing their talents with the community. The proposed concert schedule for this year is published here, if you fancy a gander.

A new day, a new vision

Something is happening at Dalkeith Road. There’s a twinkle in our eye, a pep in our step, green shoots emerging from the soil (and this is separate from the lawn getting a makeover, as I type! Thank you Susan Watson!). We love our current vision, “new believers, whole-hearted followers”. But we can’t help but feel, we’re beginning to outgrow it. It doesn’t quite capture all that we’re made to do, everyone that we’re made to love. So we’ve started asking ourselves some big, unruly questions. What if…

What if our main ministry isn’t a church service? What if our collective purpose is to facilitate relationships, to build community and to be a point for connection and belonging?

Determined to uncover the possibilities together, we asked our Dalkeith Road family “what if?” And by golly, did you deliver! Pages were overflowing with ways we can bless and connect with our community. Tai Chi on the lawn, Jazz in the hall, food trucks in the car park, sewing in the back room, painting in the studio, and a bustling café out front, filled with the joyful sounds of children playing on the playground. All these ideas, and more, are summarised on the notice board in the hall for your reading pleasure.

So where to from here?

The “"what ifs” are boundless. And each requires some level of investment, be that time, energy or finances. So we ask that you keep Dalkeith Road in your prayers, asking God to reveal to us which of these prospects to tackle now and which to hold on to until the timing is right. And if a particular idea fills you to bursting with excitement and possibility, such that you want to invest in making it a reality, tell us! Let’s work together to make it happen. In the meantime, the staff team will be categorising and prioritising, keeping you up to date as we move forward.

A cool change…

Perhaps it was the spirit moving, or perhaps it was inevitable - gathering in a confined space on a 43 degree day - either way, the conversation moved to the exhilarating possibility that we might one day stand in the hall without sweat pooling at our feet. And that we needn’t only enjoy this privilege from May through to November. Yes, we have decided to raise funds for air conditioning! Our previous quotes and a quick Google search suggest we’ll need about $25,000 to install 3 reverse cycle units in the hall and 2 in the chapel. If this is a cause that gets you hot under the collar, we are calling for contributions! So far we have $2,500 in pledges and will be recording progress with a thermometer in the hall. Chat to myself, Grant or Keaton if you’d like to make a donation or simply transfer funds to the below account, stating “I’m so cool“ as the reference. (We will also accept a reference of “air-con“ or some such variation.)

Well I’ve had about as much excitement as I can muster today. Looking forward to great things with you, and another helping of Meat and Potatoes this Sunday.

Summer Sensations

Good golly, it’s February! Time really does fly when you’re having fun. And what fun it has been, prettying up our hall! The floors are down and look SPECTACULAR. The skirting and the under stage panels are in place, all that’s left to do is paint. I do love it when a plan comes together. While we’re on the subject of plans, let’s take a look at the plan for February - it’s going to be a goodie!

Mark your calendars! Grace’s Baptism will be 11th February, 9.30am

I simply cannot think of a better way to kick off the month than with a front yard baptism! That’s right, a date has been set. I really hope you can join us on Sunday the 11th of February at 9.30am for Grace’s baptism. We are thrilled that Grace has decided to be baptised at Dalkeith Road, her spiritual home and faith community. Following the baptism, we will commence our usual service at 10am, then continue the celebrations in the hall for morning tea. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Family Gathering

The week after (February 18th) we’ll be coming together after the service for our Family Gathering. This is an opportunity to share a meal, reflect on the joys of the last 6 months and look forward to another exciting year together, building our community.

Connect returns in March

The good times continue with our weekly tradition of Coffee on the Lawn! Come grab a brew, share smiles with friends, and soak up the sunshine. It's a perfect chance to relax and recharge. We’ll be meeting every Thursday in February (10am), while our dearly loved Barry & Sheryl take a well-deserved break. Connect will be returning in March.

Dalkeith Road School of Music

Ahh the sweet, enchanting melodies of Dalkeith Road School of Music are once again filling our weekday afternoons! The teachers and students have returned for term 1 with great enthusiasm! We are thrilled to welcome back our esteemed regular teachers and are excited to introduce our new guitar teacher, Josh, who will be joining the team for one day per week. We now have more than 85 lessons scheduled each week, and are eagerly preparing for a highly anticipated concert programme. This will feature vocal recitals, opera performances, and the always popular Jazz Night! We can't wait to share these beautiful musical experiences with you.

Meat and Potatoes

Wait…what? No, that was not a typo (depsite it being dangerously close to dinner time). Meat and Potatoes is the ever-intriguing title of our next message series which kicks off this Sunday. We’ll be going back to basics as we dive into the practical ways we are called to love as followers of Christ.

It’s been a pleasure giving you the rundown of all things Dalkeith Road in February. Looking forward to sharing delicious food, great coffee, and good times with you over the coming weeks.

Until next time, stay cool y’all.

New year, new floor and new beginnings!

The new year is upon us! Can you believe we’re almost halfway through January already?! I don’t know about you but I feel a distinct sense of excitement and promise for good things this year. We’re already off to a cracking start - not one but TWO Cullen babies have arrived! Ezra Jem Wylde was born to Chelsea and Sam on the 2nd of January and Genevieve Grace Staszewski-Hose arrived on the 9th. All babies and parents are well and enjoying this magical time together. Oh, new life! Isn’t it truly miraculous?

While we’re on the topic of new things, the hall will be getting a new floor next week! Hip, hip! A gorgeous, hard-wearing, oak-look vinyl will go down next week, giving the hall a bright and polished finish. We’re investing in the hall in faith that this space will continue to flourish as a connection point for our community, and an ongoing source of income for Dalkeith Road. If you would like to contribute specifically to this investment, you can transfer funds to our account using the details below, noting ‘flooring’ in the description.

A reminder that Coffee on the Lawn won’t be happening Thursday next week (the 18th), as the building will be taken over by a troop of floor-laying experts.

Generous on every occasion

On Christmas Day we had a special offering for Nakuru Hope, the school and orphanage we support in Kenya. Over the Christmas period, the school closes and sadly, this means many of the students go without the two meals a day they would usually receive when coming to school. The team at Nakuru Hope called for donations to prepare food parcels containing essential items to feed families during the break. We managed to raise $1,972, which represents food parcels for just over 43 families! THANK YOU! It is incredibly heart-warming to be part of such a generous community. While we’re on the subject of money raised for Nakuru, I’m excited to report that our collective recycling efforts through the Containers for Change program raised over $4,100 last year! Thank you to everyone for diligently returning your cans and bottles to collection points and a very special thank you to Susan Watson and Jon Bennett who continue to personally champion this cause, foraging cans from depths and heights all over Perth. If you’d like to know more about how Nakuru Hope are breaking the cycle of poverty through education, you can visit their website here.

More good things to come

I am absolutely thrilled to announce that Grace McSkimming has made the heartfelt decision to be baptised at Dalkeith Road! This incredibly special and joyous occasion is scheduled to take place in February, and we eagerly anticipate sharing more specific details with you in the upcoming weeks.

We’re also planning our next family gathering! Following our get-together in the hall last August, the staff team will share progress toward our vision and plans for the year ahead.

Our series on Atonement Theories continues this week! Grant will be sharing his insights as we explore Christus Victors this Sunday. Hope to see you there!

Brimming with excitement,

The Joy's of December

This morning I read somewhere, 'five more sleeps', and my very insides got all fuzzy and excited, just like a child. I've always loved Christmas time. I hope I always will. What's life without a bit of excitement? A bit of festive cheer?

We've witnessed some beautiful things this December. Let me walk you through them.

Christmas in Bunbury
What a joy it is to bring joy. It really is the best gift, isn't it? To be able to give. There were a lot of very happy children last Friday night in Bunbury. Thank you to Ros, Jan, Susan, Sue and all the other people who kept this Christmas tradition alive for so long. It really is a wonderful thing and I hope we, as a church community, can continue to bring joy in this way for years to come. Oh to watch a child with a present!

Carols on the Lawn
One of my absolute favourite events of the year. Where everyone works together to ensnare the community with food, carols, and jolly good fun. Rumour is that we had 100 people on our lawn, enjoying a snag and a song. How good is that?

To our wonderful Dalkeith Road volunteers... thank you!! For all the little things, for the big things, for being there to support and enjoy it! Love your work, just love your work.

Upcoming Services
On Monday, our Christmas Day Service will start at the usual time of 10am. We will not be having our regular Sunday service this week. Have a sleep in! Go see your cousin!

We will also be taking up our annual Nakuru Hope offering on Christmas Day. We do have a goal this year, which is to feed 45 families over the Christmas break (2 weeks). Isn't it wonderful to think we can eliminate starvation over Christmas for 45 families? This will mean raising $2,000. What do you think? Can we do it?

There will be no Sunday Service on the 31st of January. Everything will return to normal in the New Year with the 7th of January being our first Sunday back.

Coffee on the Lawn
Coffee on the Lawn is having a short Christmas break, returning on the 4th of January. We look forward to seeing you in the New Year!

I hope you have a truly wonderful Christmas surrounded by those you love.

Yours festively,

Dayna

June 27, 2023

I always start these newsletters wondering what will unfold. I look into the near future dreamily and wonder, what have we in store this month at Dalkeith Road? Many good things, the future responds. Many good things. Read on for more...

The Vital Organs
But first, the past beckons! This Sunday gone was wonderful. We saw Peter and Kerri Tonkin smashing it out on Audio Vis, and my, they did a wonderful job. As someone who has to rely on the words from the stage, I was really grateful for such a team in the back there. Ros on communion! I loved the cup analogy: that we can choose what our cup is filled with and what overflows. Have you thought about what is overflowing from your cup? Ros and Glennis also filled our bellies with a delicious morning tea. Thank you!

Grant encouraged us to read the bible through two lenses; love and Christ. It is easy to interpret the bible in a variety of ways, but if we read the bible through the lenses of Christ and love, then we may know something of who God really is.

We have a children's roster! Sunday was our very first week with Kayleigh and Simmone (in interim) chilling out with the two little ones. A very exciting and useful service for all existing and future mothers that (will eventually) attend Dalkeith Road. Now we just need a playground out the front to entice the street children. Thoughts?

We brought out a very old tune this week; "All people that on earth do dwell", which has been stuck in my head for days. The congregation sang it out in A cappella at one stage, which sounded quite heavenly! Thanks for joining in on that one, even though it was a little slow to begin with ;)

What did you think of the organ? Generally curious. Too loud, too soft? Liked it? Wasn't sure? Took you back? Took you too far back? Would you like to see more organ? Is it a vital organ? Feedback welcome.

Dalkeith Road School of Music Showcase
This event will take place in our Dalkeith Road Concert Hall, on Thursday the 29th of June (next Thursday!) at 6.30PM. This is always a fantastic opportunity to support our young musicians as they perform for a live audience.

In the past, Dalkeith Road has supported this event by bringing a plate to share for supper. Please feel free to contribute in this way if you would like to do so :)

Wednesday Morning Prayer
Do you ever make spaces to pray intentionally? We've opened up a space for prayer on Wednesday mornings at 8am each week - a truly wonderful way to start the day. Join us if you can :)

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Quizmas in July
Christmas feast - Tick
Cuddly Christmas cardigans encouraged - Tick
Christmas carol sing-a-long - Tick

A great opportunity to have fun and let your hair down - Tick

I, for one, am really looking forward to singing 'Baby, it's cold outside', and it being true. We may never go dashing through the snow on the 25th of December, but we can dream of a White Christmas, can't we? We can roast our chestnuts by an open fire, mightn't we?

So gather all your merry friends and book your table now for Quizmas in July at 6pm Friday, July 21st!

Nakuru Hope Meet and Greet
An opportunity to meet the School and Orphanage Director of Nakuru Hope approaches! Christopher Makokha and Susan Saleeba (Founder/Chair) will be doing a presentation and providing a space for questions and answers. If you would like to know more about Nakuru Hope before attending the event here is their website.

Alternatively, check out this video of some of our congregation visiting the Orphanage back in 2018.
Dalkeith Road Mission Trip to Nakuru - 2018

As someone who has travelled and visited Nakuru Hope School and Orphanage, I can tell you this is a worthy cause to support. What Susan, Christopher and their team have achieved is truly remarkable. I hope to see you on Sunday the 13th of August at 2pm at the Dalkeith Bowling Club to support our friends from Nakuru Hope :)

To register your acceptance, please go to:

This is Your Life
Thank you to those you have RSVP'd to this event! Quite a crew we have representing Dalkeith Road in support of our wonderful Barry Ryall.
If you haven't expressed your interest yet but wish to go, please let me know as soon as possible. Tickets are $30 each which will go towards a delicious meal and an excellent night.

Stage Eye-lids

And to top it off I have some thrilling news! Our concert hall is getting curtains! Some very delicious curtains at that. What a glorious performance space this hall is turning out to be!

In the past, many congregation members have expressed interest in supporting the church in funding these curtains. If this sounds like something you'd still like to do, feel free to donate any amount to the Dalkeith Road Church of Christ account.

With that, I bid thee farewell! Have a fabulous rest of your week :)

October 3, 2022

What another wonderful week. Though alas, the fever of hay is upon a few unlucky members. I hope you're not one of them. I wish this swollen, itchy and cloudy plague on no one! If you have a cure, do share.

Coffee on the Lawn

Another great Thursday has been and gone! We were finally free to enjoy the wonderful weather via the veranda out the front. The magpies were curious, the breeze soft as the Australian native leaned lazily in the sun. Conversation was ripe and filled with the occasional inspired pun we all love, coming in the direction of Barry.

Dwellingup Adventure

Something many of us that attend DR are looking forward to! An adventure to Dwellingup on Thursday the 27th of October. For those planning to attend, please arrive at 8.45 at DR for a 9am take off. Plan is to land back at DR by 4.30 pm.

Volunteers wanted

There are lots of ways to get involved at DR! We would love more people to take part in the Sunday Service for one. If you feel like you could enjoy greeting at the door, sharing a communion message, jumping on the worship team, closing the service with a pastoral prayer, or perhaps sharing an offering talk, I think I can speak for the church family when I say we would love to use the gifts you have to offer!

If you're currently unsure, think and pray on it. Opportunities will keep a knockin'.

Thanks abundantly to those who are already giving their time to serve at DR. Morning tea makers, communion creators, audio visual technician genius', songstresses and musicians all. For the small things with great love and oft behind the scenes washers of tea-towels and takers of bins. What a wonderful team we have here at DR.

Op-Tober

It is events like this that make us look back on life with great fondness and shining eyes. What makes this event so great you ask? Well Barry will be MC-ing for starters, that's always a good time. Keaton Staz will be "Staz-Jazzing", a very remarkable thing you must know. But the most wonderful thing of all is that YOU will be gett involved, walking down that cat walk with the biggest grin on your face. It's for a good cause. It's going to be a laugh. What more could you want?
